Starting May 7, 2025, every traveler 18 years and older is required to show a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another TSA-acceptable form of ID, at any TSA checkpoint within the United States. REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses are available through the American Samoa Office of Motor Vehicles. Travelers may also use a valid U.S. passport as an acceptable from of ID at all TSA checkpoints.

Due to the REAL ID requirement, the American Samoa Certificate of Identity will no longer be accepted as valid identification at any TSA checkpoint throughout the United States, including the TSA checkpoint in American Samoa. A Certificate of Identity may only be accepted as a valid form of identification at the immigration checkpoint when arriving in Honolulu from American Samoa.

Therefore, U.S. nationals and citizens traveling abroad from American Samoa are strongly encouraged to obtain a U.S. passport or a REAL ID-compliant form of identification.
